ELECTRIC ANT ZINE BLOG

dispatches from members of the extended zine family

the lonesome outfit

Hi to electric ant. Sands has been reposting for me periodically, but I figured I'd stop being a bitch and post shit myself. This is a repost from my blawg:

I drew these in pencil for a homework assignment last semester, and I was damn proud, but I never posted them:

Then I colored them in Faux Toe Chop this week, just for fun:

This was inspired partially by the spirit and style of the once-great KING BROTHERS (their newest stuff kind of blows... what's with great Asian rock bands adding bullshit alterna-vocal-melodies to everything???)

but I was also "inspired by" (i.e., I totally copied) this totally sweet beat drummer kokeshi toy I got off etsy in February (pictures c/o the seller):

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I'm totally turning these drawings into a comic after (during?) Jin & Jam. For real, I'm gonna dew it. YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST, FOLX

Weekend Collages: Postcards Pt. 2

Sorting and cleaning our bookshelves a bit today, I came across some old magazines and comics I'd received as gifts from Alice. It'd been a while since I made any new collages, and I'm right in the middle of a fun mail streak-- so I decided to bust out my glue, x-acto and alvin cutting board.

Here's the 4 newest postcards, featuring clippings from an '80s Fangoria and other sources. Extra points for naming the specific movies and/or background YouTube clips!

This Week: SF Comics Reading / East Bay Music Playing

Hello San Francisco Bay Area Electric Ant Zine Blog Readers,

CalvinHellen, and I will be taking part in a comics reading on Thursday at Modern Times Books (20th & Valencia - map) at 7pm.

The very talented and funny Joey Sayers and Minty Lewis are having a joint book release party and we're tagging along (actually, I'm tagging along). Jason Shiga and Tessa Brunton will be reading too.

You should come because I promise to sing at least one comic. Actually, you should come because, while I have no idea what I'm doing, all these other artistes are genuine entertainers!

And, if you need more action in your life, my Germart brothers are playing a show at the Orange Room on Saturday night at 9pm on the Oakland/Emeryville border (2885 Ettie Street - map, flyer attached). So, get your carpool together and ride over to a performance of Planet Booty, which, you may remember, was recently named one of the Worst Album Covers of All Time by the Chicago Tribune. (Thanks to all for voting... we clinched around 88% of the talley!)

(Flyer's attached.)

Hope to see y'all soon!

Asian art...can you dig it?

Hey kids, do you like museums? Did you know that the Asian Art Museum has a blog? Not like, just any ol' blog, but a pretty dang good one, with lots of fresh updates written by all kinds of passionate people that work there.

You might think I'm just shilling for this pseudo-new bundle of joy of ours, but in all sincerity, it's all quality AND quantity, and you do learn a lot of cool stuff. Do you know what it takes to actually assemble and display a real samurai armor? Or that there's a umbrella with a sword handle? That our Bhutanese monks went to a baseball game (and Disneyland)? That our own director dressed up as a samurai for a staff meeting? Or how about the fact that before even the former main library was built (it's the building the museum is in now), they burned tons of opium pipes on the site? Sometimes the posts are enlightening, and sometimes they're just silly.

Take this video, for example. We worked hard to bring you the best in hammy, silly entertainment, all in the name of good humor and samurai exhibition promotional buzz. Please watch it, and go here to watch the other two companion video clips. They're super short! If you watch the other two, leave a comment so I know you were there!

Anyway, check it out and if you see anything you like/dislike, holla with a comment. If you really want to support us, please help us get our link out there in cyberland. Thanks!

if only it was that easy

I like Rama Hughes. At least, I like him from the work of his that I've seen (especially portraits). His instructional how-to-make-a-comic makes it seem so easy. Just reading it motivates me to give it a college try. Then again, most how-to-make-a-comic/zine/mini/etc things usually have that effect on me.

The other image is I guess a gag cartoon by one of his seventh grader students? I just think it's so charming and clever. Super cute.

I wish we as adults could all draw with the pure, sweet abandon and unfiltered creativity that only kids can possess.
For more of his students' darling works, check out his Flickr.

Dawon on my roof

Hey kids,

Here's my latest set of fashion photography, featuring my good friend / #1 muse, Dawon. I shot these on my roof last month, but didn't get a chance to edit them until last night. I wanted to mix the chaotic look of my old favorite technique - scattered India ink, with the more glossy look of my fashion / beauty photography. The last one is untouched, but I just included it because Dawon looks super cute in it.

Can You HELP!?

Of the various types of beverages that have come to our great country, I count the black tea tapioca drink among the greatest.  It is flexible enough to be a rich and creamy Hazelnut or a crisp and refreshing mango passion fruit.  Also, it can weird some people out, which is a plus.  Those slippery little balls are chewy treat to some, but remind others of eyeballs.  I say, why deny this?  Let us work together to make a tapioca ball that actually looks like an eyeball!

Can anyone out there help develope this concept sketch into a tasty tapioca tea beverage?  Or maybe just a t-shirt design?

YOUR FRIENDLY EA#2 CREW (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Spending some time trying to wrap my head around the burgeoning timebomb of stress/awesomeness that will become Electric Ant #2: Exquisite Corpses. The books will likely tap out at around 140 pages (give or take), with a wide spread of written, illustrated, collaged, and photographic content. Submissions are rolling in over the next weeks, and this list is subject to change!

It's not prudent to post any sorta Table of Contents or descriptions this early, and I can't promise that every single person will end up in Electric Ant #2, but here is the tentative contributor list as of today. I honestly couldn't be more stoked and beside myself with this group-- you guys are all so radical!

What's your take on... Sarah Ferrick?

Sarah Ferrick is constantly churning out these amazing drawings. Her lines are unique, her colors are rich and inviting, and the motion in her artwork blows my mind. Here: her flickr, her sketchbook tumblr, and her website.
