AX Research Project!!

Recently, Ryan announced on Same Hat! Same Hat! the forthcoming translation of AX magazine content,  AX(Vol 1): A Collection of Alternative Manga, edited by  Sean Michael Wilson (author, manga creator) and Mitsuhiro Asakawa (journalist, Japanese editor of Ax).  For those unfamiliar with AX magazine, it is a rich souce of Japanese alternative manga which has provided it's readers with surreal and off-beat comics for around a decade and it's publisher, Seirinkogeisha, might be considered the Fantagraphics or Drawn and Quarterly of Japan.  I've "read" AX for many years even though I don't know Japanese.  Never the less, I dutifully studied each issue I came across and found the experience rewarding.  So I crapped my pants when the rumors of a mass of translations (400 pages) were verified by photographic evidence.  But what really caught my eye was the following list of confirmed mangaka:

Even though I've been deeply influenced artistically by the artists in AX magazine, I only know the names of a hand full of artists, many by their art but not their names.  What good is a list of names when there's no art or info to go along with the names.  So I'm hoping the fine readers and contributors of this blog can take a moment to google a name on this list and post the most interesting and elucidating results they come across.  I certainly plan on doing so, but there's no reason we can't all partake in the fun!

UPDATE 2: Courtesy of the great and knowledgable Ed Chavez at MangaCast, here are covers and details for artists featured in the AX Anthology!

Akino Kondoh is published in France by same hat friends, Le Lezard Noir. Her book collection is here: http://www.lezardnoir.org/book.php?IDbook=58&lang=

She's known for manga to an extent (and that's her painting on the faux-cover on Same Hat) but she is also indie-famous as a painter, as evidenced on her site: http://akinobox.kiteretsu.jp/picture.html

...and an animator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p87Z7YAB2zM

Yoshihiro Tatsumi needs no introduction to this group. He is one of three famous founders of the Gekiga style of "dramatic pictures". He has 3 books out from Drawn & Quarterly, all edited and hand-lettered by Adrian Tomine.

The most important manga of 2009 is his 30-year spanning, 800+ page autobiography. It's his own life story, but also functions as a history of modern manga. The book was just released by Seirinkogeisha (the folks that publish Ax and Tokyo Zombie, etc) in the past few months... part 1 of the book came out in November, and part 2 JUST came out in Japanese.

I wrote a letter in support of D&Q's publication of this book for a national grant they applied for, and read the first 100 pages of this thing in English. In the second or third chapter he meets a young Tezuka for the first time (in T's hometown of Takarazuka) and it's beautiful. EAZ contributor Nate has read the entire thing in Japanese and says it is incredible.

Minami Shinbo (南伸坊) . I don't recognize the name, but he seems to be a 60+ year old illustrator/essayist and cartoonist. I sorta maybe recognize his style, cute and weird dollup shaped characters, very blue color and comedic stuff.

Here is the (google) translated wikipedia page for him: http://tinyurl.com/shinbo

Seirinkogeisha has tons of books by him, just click any of the "MORE" links on this author entry: http://www.seirinkogeisha.com/artist/mnsn1.html

Here is one of his book covers:
http://www.tis-home.com/profile/267_3.jpg
(his signature-- the kanji for SOUTH- minami, with SHINBOU written in hiragana below)

Finally, a google image search brings up mostly pictures of him (evidence that he is famous not just as a cartoonist but as a pop culture personality): http://tinyurl.com/btjbjb

Oh, I see you want like proper posts :) Well, I'll dump what I find here and leave it to others to decide which ones are worth highlighting like your Akino Kondoh post and then go for it. I don't think each name on that list requires its own post, but some definitely will :)

Wow, that's a lotta good info there, Ryan. You're the regular font of knowledge. That is indeed the sort of introduction I was thinking of. I made an additional post because I was smitten by Akino Kondoh and wanted to share the eye candy. Perhaps a post for each name on the list is excessive, but it's fun discovering new artists and seeing old favorites in a new light.

Word, I totally agree. I'll try to do 2 or 3 more of the less-famous ones today-- at very least get their translated wikipedia links and name Kanji to facilitate search.

Next on the list, Shinichi Abe (安部慎一).
"Underground cartoonist" and of the same mood and style as some of Seiichi Hayashi (Red Colored Elegy)... Was published in the 80s and 90s in GARO, and then later in AX. The story of his in the Ax book is called "ME" and an excerpt was included in the Ax Anthology sampler at APE.

A site with details about his work and shots of panels:
http://plaza.rakuten.co.jp/ekatocato/diary/200310090000/

Listing of work available via the Mandarake site
http://www.mandarake.co.jp/publish/abe/

From a Same Hat Reader:
I first learned of him when I saw mention of his comic "Burai no omokage." I mentioned the title to a Japanese friend, who I knew would be interested in it. She researched it, gave me his name, and told me of his mental problems (schizophrenia.) The story ended up being in an issue of Garo as well as his book Miyoko Asagaya Kibun.

I don't know how available his material is, but Miyoko Asagaya Kibun can be found at ebookjapan:
http://www.ebookjapan.jp/shop/book.asp?sku=60000679&authorid=86

Some columns by Abe on the seirinkogeisha site:

Next on the list, Namie Fujieda (藤枝奈己絵). This is another name I totally don't recognize...

It seems that she has serialized a number of stories in Ax, including the following:
12/04 - 12/05 : Henwāteru Karakomatteru (変わってるから困ってる), which was collected in a book:
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/I/511905288GL._SS500_.jpg
started 12/06: Yume iro Onīchan (夢色お兄ちゃん)

one-shots:
2/02: Kagayuki Hito. (輝く人.)
2/04: Ōno no Ojisan (大野のおじさん)

Mitsuhiko Yoshida (吉田光彦) is a dude that specializes in dramatic historical fiction stuff. His line work is impeccable but his stories are not usually my style.

It's hard to state exactly, but his stuff is like the straight-faced version of the very classic and detailed lines of yesteryear that Suehiro Maruo also references.

His janky site with a large gallery of little pics is here:
http://act9.jp/yoshida_mitsuhiko/index.htm

He also did a series of Alice in Wonderland illustrations, some of which are really creepy and sorta otherworldy, here:
http://www.span-art.co.jp/parts/dm/071206/24.jpg

Some beautiful images:

Enjoy!

Thanks Azraelito :) Mimiyo Tomozawa is a female mangaka, actually. She did the cover to a Jim O'Rourke album that I recognize... That site (Royal County Arbiter) seems really cool-- great link.

@Stephane: Great to see you on here, le lezard noir! I wonder what Akino-san is up to in NYC? Is she focusing more on animation and painting these days?

Time to get cracking on research. I'll do Nishioka Kyodai next!

Nishioka Brosis, as the name indicates, are in fact a brother and a sister. They published stuff in Garô, Morning and AX. You can find a review of one of their manga here : http://www.du9.org/Kokoro-no-Kanashimi,828

Kotobuki Shiriagari did quite various stuff. He was a guest at the Angoulême festival a few years back. Interview and reviews here : http://www.du9.org/spip.php?page=recherche&recherche=kotobuki+shiriagari
and some infos : http://lambiek.net/artists/s/shiriagari_kotobuki.htm

Shigeyuki Fukumitsu, I don't know very well but from what I've seen of his work, this article is pretty accurate : http://www.japanjournal.jp/tjje/show_art.php?INDyear=09&INDmon=01&artid=04de1dbebaa9d41c04b8ce4448b29512

Also, Shin'ichi Abe and Kazuichi Hanawa ( http://lambiek.net/artists/h/hanawa_kazuichi.htm )have had a few of their books translated in french, if that can help...

Among the authors on this list, there are quite a few of whom I've already bought books but haven't come around to reading them yet. What a shame.

Here are a few links I found showcasing Imiri Sakabashira-

http://billrandall.net/blog/2008/imiri-sakabashira-paintings-manga/

His work appears to have been featured once in Vice Magazine (think this was highlighted by Same Hat ages ago) .

Also, you used to be able to buy ltd edition wallets by him from a company called Poketo - http://poketo.com/shop/archives/487 - but these are now all sold out.

Check out these Yusaku Hanakuma wallets tho! - http://poketo.com/shop/archives/533

Here's a blog with some information regarding Nishioka Kyodai... http://fullergoeasy.blogspot.com/2008/02/twisted-harmony-of-nishioka-kyodai.html - I like the look of this. It's like some really twisted European children's book illustrations.

Mangascreener and Band of the Hawks scanlated the first 6 chapters of Journey to the End of the World here... http://fullergoeasy.blogspot.com/2008/02/twisted-harmony-of-nishioka-kyodai.html - Just downloading them now.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Takato Yamamoto appears to operate in an Ero-Guru style not completely dissimilar to Suehiro Maruo. Here's a llink to a blog with more info plus links to additional galleries of his art... http://www.johncoulthart.com/feuilleton/2007/06/25/the-art-of-takato-yamamoto/
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a nice little report on Kataoka Toyo... http://community.livejournal.com/mangacast/505342.html - I really like the look of this guy's art.

- Obviously, I take no credit for any of this information. Basically I did a few google searches and trawled through the results to find the most informative posts to save everyone else the trouble!
Tidy.

Hi gang,
Just a note to say that the Ax book is almost half done now. Latest creators to be 'Eigofied' are Kawai, Shiriagari, Otoya and Shigeyuki. The Kawai 8 pager involves pins, new girlfriends and old boyfriends!
