Covered Meme! THANOS LIVES 4EVER

Here's my new addition to the COVERED meme. It's the cover to Thanos: The Infinity Gauntlet #1, from the eponymous Marvel miniseries. I spent way too much time on this goddamn collage, using 19th century etchings from various Dover books and drawing/pose reference guides.

Just to note, aside from printing the gauntlet's source image off an old armory website, everything in this collage was made using a copy machine, gluestick and scalpel.

(special thanks to evan for helping me crop the photographs of the xerox - my scanner is busted!)

Yeah- classy is the word. I can't imagine the amount of time it took to find all of that source material for the collage. So awesome you did it all the old fashioned way. <3

a copy machine, gluestick and scalpel... that's the way to do it!

@cal: I am following in your footsteps in terms of busy and stuffed covers. Marvel ridiculous crossover miniseries is where classy is at!

@saicoink: It took a long, long time but was actually really fun. This is the kind of nerdy busywork I actually really enjoy.

@MCV: Thanks, dude! I used 2 different dover collections and cut out and pieced together the lettering with the exacto: Art Deco design fonts, and Bizarre & Ornamental Typography!

@Michael: After realizing (with the Pitt one) that I really can't draw, an attempt at a Ernst-inspired collage seemed to be the way to go

@Rob: OG PAPERCRAFTMAKERZ 4 LIFE

jesus, you've really outdone yourself this time, ye bastard. i LOVE that you used an old victorian-esque aesthetic. the typeface selections are fresh. and how the heck did you even put thanos together? this is amazing. what would george perez say?

Victorian feel, fo realz! Though if somebody cries "steampunk," I will shove them up Cory Doctorow's asshole

@jenn: aw shucks, thanks! The Thanos head is made from:
Top half: SE Asian tribal mask
Lower jaw: The inside of a piano
Eyebrows: Half a diamond
Horns: Pipes from a pipe organ

@cal: ewwwwww, don't you dare call this steampunk. i would be sad :B

dude ryan the pitt one was awesome first of all
and this one is just my favorite thing in the world ever, i mean, can you even handle that?

Dude, I think you've found your calling. A comic in this style would be so incredible. Not to mention time-consuming... but tell me you haven't considered it :B And this Frankenstein aesthetic is totally appropriate for the theme of the next EA! You know it!

Non sequitur - I didn't think Spelunky was going to eat my life, but it looks like it has. Oh well.

as I told you, but I figure it bears repeating here for the public record, this is AMAZING :-)

Thanks Evvo :)

@Mickey: I don't think I can handle it. But I will try to deliver something better for your project!

@Sophia: good call! You are absolutely right, the design theme for issue 2 is all Max Ernst VS. cody cricheltoe... collage and mush, fed through boring academic text books. we'll see how it goes!

DUDE, spelunky is getting to be too big a part of my life too. I've died 617 times as of last night, but I can now get to the snow caves without TOO much frustration, and am just starting to try out the temple levels. I am still extremely apt to die within the first 20 seconds of any given level. ARRHGHHHH.

But I love it...

I broke the 100 death milestone a few days ago. But I still can't get out of the jungle. :C

I'll stop derailing this post with Spelunky babble now.

Feb 17, 2009
Congrats! I think the fucking Jungle levels are the hardest and most painful in the game... Those fucking frogs! On that note, I fully support a Spelunky screenshot post (F9 to take a snapshot in game, which saves in your folder as a BMP)
