EA#1 available at Mission: Comics & Art

Here's an update to the growing list of stores carrying Electric Ant. As of last Wednesday, our neighborhood boats an awesome new comic shop, Mission: Comics & Art! I was alerted to the new place by Ryan Germick, who introduced to the proprietor Leef Smith over email.

Tooday, I stopped by and met Leef in person-- he's a cool dude, born and bred San Franciscan who lives in the Mission. The shop features a nice, clean layout similar to Comix Experience but with a little more space. We talked about the balance between indie comics, mainstream TPBs and catering to the Wednesday new comics crowd.

The store is still working out the inventory levels, but I saw a great mix of stuff I am into: new floppies from last week, DC's newsprint Wednesday Comics, Tom Gauld's THIS GIGANTIC ROBOT from Buenaventura, etc. At this time, I didn't see any manga in stock at the store, which is okay since I rely almost entirely on Kinokuniya for my English and Japanese langauge manga fixes. I bought a copy of Sweet Tooth #1, and a surreal Green Lantern tpb illustrated by the late (and great) Seth Fisher that was recommended to me.

Mission: Comics & Art also features a nice-sized gallery space in the back, with three walls for curating comics/fine art exhibits. I can think easily think of a bunch of local cartoonists (EAZ contributors, all of 'em!) who could do a great show there! Was fun talking shop with the owner, and I'm stoked to see what the next months hold. They will be open 'til 8pm Tues - Sunday, so I plan to head here after work on New Comics Day (every Wednesday) instead of Lee's in Mountain View.

On a final note, Leef is interested in stocking out a Local/minicomics/zines section there, and took on some copies of Electric Ant #1. If you are in the hood and want to recommend it to someone, they can now grab a copy there while supporting local business.

EDIT: Made some corrections from Leef

Thanks for the great shout-out Ryan! And fabulous talking shop with you as well!

Much appreciated. One small correction: I plan to be open till 8pm Tuesday - Sunday, at least for the foreseeable future, subject to change and all that nonsense, not just Wednesdays.

Oh! And though I did grow-up Outer-Mission/Excelsior, I've been living the Lower 24th for years now ;) But you could argue, that Mission is the Mission, whatever side you live on.

Manga's a tough one for me to stock, just because so many people by Manga online, or at BIG book stores. I know one shop owner that ended up having to donate tons of Manga to the library because he couldn't sell it. Hard to compete with Kinokuniya, especially with a family member working there. Any suggestions on how Manga might sell better? In the Mission? Is that even possible? What titles might actually sell in the Hood?

@missioncomics:
Thank you for stocking my little book. I'm excited to have the shop in our hood --- many best wishes for your success. I'll stop by on my way home from work for new comics day :)

I totally hear you on the Manga side-- there are so many genres/series, and a lot of the most popular ones are multi-volume series that continue on ad infinitum.
I should correct my post, you did have a few titles like Junko Mizuno's new one from Last Gasp, etc. As a starting point, books like that-- one shots that work as indie gns or "literature" could be good, The Tatsumi collections (edited/lettered by Tomine) from D&Q, perhaps some of Fanfare/Ponent Mon's manga like Disappearance Diary or their Tanizaki books. I'm biased, but weird books like Junko's stuff or Tokyo Zombie (hopefully) have some crossover potential :)

Wonder what exactly works in The Mission... I know Borderlands carries some SF and Horror manga (Dragon Head, Kurosagi Corpse Delivery, To Terra, etc), but I don't know how well it sells.

@pseudo
Oh nice, thanks again for supporting the book! Issue 2 comes out in October (as long as I don't drop dead!)

This, combined with the Rosamunde location opening in the Mission, makes me think I seriously left at the wrong time. :/ Nonetheless, even if I don't get to partake, this is still very exciting! I like the clean look, and it sounds like there's a great selection. Hope I can visit sometime :3
