Koji Yamamura!

Last Thursday I had the pleasure of hearing Koji Yamamura lecture at RISD. He's an award-winning animator with a really lovely style. Recently he did an adaptation of Kafka's 1919 short story "A Country Doctor." We saw clips of this, along with several of his other animations including "The Old Crocodile," "Fig," and "A Child's Metaphysics." He may be most famous for "Mt. Head," which was nominated for an Oscar in 2003.

I wasn't able to find "Fig" online -- it was my favorite -- but instead here I have "The Old Crocodile" and also a trailer for "The Country Doctor."

His website is also worth a look, it includes some whimsical little Flash animations.

If you have a chance to see more of his work at a festival, please do!

Wow dude, I found these really creepy--- but unique and pretty too. The alligator short was very clean and like post-colonial or something? It reminded me of a European film or picture book about Africa.

The sound editing and subtle movements are really nice (that gullet sound effect = ewww). How was his actual lecture?

Ryan: His lecture was not very in-depth... he spoke some English okay but mostly had a translator. He told us a bit of how he started drawing when he was very young, etc. Many people asked questions about why/how he chose the subject matter for his stories, and what he was trying to say with his animations, and his response was almost always "Just watch the animation! If I could say it in words I wouldn't have to make an animation." Which I thought was a little badass :]

Jenn: Yes, I am a junior in illustration. It is pretty exciting.

Glad you both liked!

Man, Koji Yamamura is a god! Definitely one of my favourite modern animators. A Country Doctor was fucking crazy!
You should also look up a short animation he did for Greenpeace, its about an old school principal who recounts his fascination with whales. I can't the name of it now though...

I saw A Country Doctor a while ago and was both crept out and amazed. I'm happy to see that there is more.
