My little addition to the covers meme...
When I was young, one of my very favorite comics was Matt Wagner's Grendel series. It was the first real "grown up" series I read (well, that and Swamp Thing), and it started to open my eyes to what comics could do beyond superheroes. The character of Grendel may look from this cover like a hero character, but it more like a curse upon whoever would fill the role of Grendel. This was a character that spanned many, many years, viewed by society as a hero, a villian, a military force, a religion... all depending on the era.
Comico carried the series for quite a while in the 80s, then it lay dormant when Comico shut down. The series was resurrected by Dark Horse in the early 90s.
This cover is from issue 7 of the Comico series. My version was done in Sharpie marker and a little crayon. I'm too lazy to do the background :-P
