Electric Ant #2 (and Gaga fanzine Prison For Bitches) contributor Chris Kuzma received a sweet and happily perplexing email from a U.S. Marine this week. The dude is our age (or actually, younger!?) and seems really rad. He's serving in Afghanistan and currently home for December-- and wanted to let us know he got a tattoo of Kuzma's intense NECROMANTIK  illustration from the THESE BLOODY MOMENTS feature in Electric Ant #2!

WHOA. We here the guys is a fan of the Electric Ant Zine crew and is planning to study illustration after he finishes serving in Afghanistan. I'm gonna get in touch via Chris and see if I can mail him some comics and shirts while he is over there. FRESH.

This past Thursday (11/3/11), Floating World Comics in Portland was awesome enough to host THICKNESS for a release party as part of their ongoing First Thursdays series. Complete details about the show are here on their site.

Sadly my co-editor Michael DeForge couldn't make it, but I was joined at the show by my sister-from-another-mister Angie Wang and my travel buddy Evan Hayden. The show flew by and was a blast, and then later that night we all drank/sang our faces off with aplomb at Zack Soto's birthday party/karaoke shindig. Here are a few pics of the exhibit, which will be on display for the month of November at Floating World! (thanks to Evan for taking the last two pics in this set):

I read today that the coastal town of Matsushima, just north of Sendai in Miyagi-ken, was spared some of the devastation that affected surrounding areas. Despite early reports that Matsushima was "seriously damaged," locals now are reporting that Matsushima (perhaps because of its series of coastal islands) was not hit as hard as some nearby towns despite being so close to the quake's epicenter.

I was digging through my photos this past weekend, and found photos (in addition to some already posted) from my trip in May 2003 up the coast to Sendai and Matsushima. I have found memories of the few days we spent up there, and my thoughts continue to go out to folks recovering slowly in Miyagi.

Dominique Young Unique is 19, from Tampa, and fucking awesome. The production on her two mixtapes "Domination" and "Glamorous Life" is out of control, and her flow is this weird mix of Missy sarcasm, Nicki staccato and some weird post-post-Millennial ADHD wordplay. (Thanks to Alice for the head's up about Dominique!)

Most of the tracks on Domination start out as one kind of song and then morph abpuptly in this insane/beautiful way into a totally different beat. AMAZING STUFF!  Also: Her track "Pussy Popping" is our generation's "My Neck, My Back" Check out some videos to see what I mean:

I think I had seen the work of fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez without realizing it, but loved this blog post/gallery giving an overview of one piece of his amazing output. Here is a summary/gallery via Trendland (Thanks for the head's up to Alice!)

"Antonio Lopez is the Picasso of fashion illustration. Mostly known as just plain ‘Antonio’, he was a giant in the field of fashion illustration. He captured the pulse of style from the 60s to the 80s, and is still revered as the most inspiring illustrator by today’s practitioners. He worked with a variety of materials including pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, watercolor and polaroid film. His work appeared frequently in Vogue, Harper’s bazzar, Elle and Interview.
